Old Caz Hopper
Jan. 28th - Quintessential Hopper (Cross/Gravel Bike)
Old Caz is the quintessential Hopper. With three dirt climbs and descents, an eclectic patchwork of Sonoma County ribbon roads and a creek crossing,Old Caz is the epitome of adventure riding.
We begin with a stiff climb up Coleman Valley Rd. A start that will quickly thin the field and reveal who has done their Winter homework. Rt turn on Willow Creek where the pavement ends at mile 3 and we get our first dirt of the day. We’ll rip a 4 mile dirt descent to Hwy 1 and then cruise along the Russian River to Duncan’s Mills. New this year is a right turn onto Moscow Rd to Monte Rio and then a left on Bohemian Hwy. Take Hwy 116 West to the tiny exit onto Duncan Rd and this is where the labyrinth begins. The course WILL be marked but you MUST stay alert to not get turned around. Here are the exact Map/Route Details for Old Caz. Pre-ride if you get a chance or study the map. Remember …fail to plan, plan to fail. The course will be marked and there will be marshals at a few key intersection but there are a lot of little roads and turns. Oh, and don’t forget the creek crossing! What bike to ride? Old Caz has been won on a road bike, mountain bike and cross bike. The roads are rough and descents are tricky. If you only have on bike, ride what you have, and give thanks. If you have choices…ideally a hard tail mtb with skinny tires or a cross/gravel bike with semi slick tires 32-38. You can do it on a road bike but will run the risk of flatting.
There will be an Hammer Nutrition hydration and nutrition stop at the top of Old Caz climb @mile 25. There will also be Chia Bars from HealthWarrior . In addition we’ll have water, a few snacks to help you on your way. You can stop to fill up or if you leave your own bottles (clearly labeled with you name) at the NorCal Bikesport tent at the start , we’ll have them set out for you to grab. No hand-ups. This year there will be a second “rest” stop at the bottom of Willow Creek to top off your bottles and grab a quick snack. Please DO NOT leave clothing at the feed zones. All left over bottles and miscellaneous items will be dropped back at the Occidental Community Center.
There will be prizes for top 3 men/women. We will have timing/scoring age-group based. There will be prize at the King Ridge Dirt Supreme finale for top 3 in all categories. Grasshoppers have always been about adventure, exploration and pushing your limits. All Hopper routes are open to vehicles and riders must obey all traffic laws and rules. See RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
